Killing Time

Hi people!!

Holidays are around the corner. Have you thought of anything which you can do in your free time? If you had not, let me help you! I would suggest you to do some volunteer work! Hey! It sounds interesting right? Many people might think that they are just wasting time but you would only realize how satisfied you are when you did it. Trust me.

I wish to recommend people to help out at Red Cross Home for the Disable (RCHD). It is located at Elizabeth Drive. Not only by financial but also by accompanying the residents. Have you ever wondered how the residents spent their time when most of the time they are on the bed? Can you understand their loneliness when no one went over to visit them and chat with them? You try putting yourself in their shoes. Not only would you know the feeling of boredom but you could also realize how fortunate you are. Isn’t that a lesson learnt?

Let me give you a rough idea about the residents. The residents of the Home suffer from various disabilities which include spastic quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Down Syndrome, epilepsy and other severe physical deformities. RCHD is the only residential Home in Singapore that provides residential care to the severely disabled in Singapore. The services are targeted at residential care for severely intellectually and physically disabled persons whose family members are no longer able to continue with their care.

Furthermore, many of the relatives did not go over to visit them. So, you can do a part by spending some time talking to them. They are people who are easily cheered up. They do not wish to be someone famous nor a wealthy person. They just hope to spend their life happily and sharing joy with people who care for them. Yes, they are that innocent.

Here’s an advice of you! I remembered the Social Worker of RCHD, Ms Koh Yen Yen, once told me that life has its ups and downs and when we are at our downs, we should still stay happy. This is because no matter if you are happy or troubled, life still goes on. Therefore why not we spend our life happily and meaningfully?

You can make a difference by volunteering and sharing your expertise, time, and resources in the caring for the residents.
